Not everyone is a designer! But tools like CANVA have opened doors for everyone to create design elements. If you feel your creations always look "off", follow these 5 basic rules and you'll create much more professional designs.
1. Define a colour palette
Choose 2 to 4 colours that represent your brand and use them consistently. Inconsistent colours make the design confusing and unprofessional.
2. Use a maximum of 2 typefaces
One for headings and one for body text. Mixing too many fonts creates visual confusion. Choose fonts that complement each other.
3. Contrast is king
Make sure text is always readable against the background. Good contrast improves readability and accessibility.
4. Respect white space
Empty space is not wasted space — it's breathing room for the design. Give elements room so the eye can rest and focus on what's important.
5. Visual hierarchy
Guide the user's eye through the design using size, colour and position. The most important element should be the most prominent.
